Winter sun sinks behind the silhouettes of a forest

The winter solstice is here. The shortest day. The longest night.

I profoundly struggled with the darker, winter months in past years. These days I’m a lot better, but the winter solstice still holds a place in my heart.

Not that any immediate difference is felt, the days are still so short. After the excitement and festivity of Christmas and New Year, January and February feel like very long months, and there will be no remarkable difference in daylight until at least March. But the solstice is a temporal landmark, and a reminder that the days are getting longer, even if it seems like they’re not.

I’m working today, but I kind of feel like I should make more of solstice in future. Maybe take the day off and go for a long walk.

Happy winter solstice 2023!
