I’m feeling heavy-hearted right now.
I found out the 24 acres of land between Golwyg Y Cwm and Waun Gyrlais is up for sale by Powys County Council. Its future is uncertain.
In my 7 years of living in Ystradgynlais, I’ve walked this land countless times, through all the seasons, at all times of day. I’ve stood admiring fiery sunsets down the valley; seen morning mist hugging the summer grass; crunched over hoar frosts in the early hours; watched storm light incinerating the heath against sooty skies; enjoyed the subtle autumn tones on subdued grey days; walked several different dogs; and of course watched my daughter having a whale of a time finding sticks, splashing in puddles and mud, and climbing small trees.
I’ve had countless conversations with other walkers on this land — several now sadly departed.
It has calmed my mind during hard times, and inspired me during lean times.
Whilst this land doesn’t have the official designation of a park, recreational ground, or nature reserve, it has immense value to me and countless others who have enjoyed it long before I arrived.
My heart breaks when wild spaces are traded for development. It isn’t just ‘land’ — it is our breathing space. And once it’s gone, we can never get it back. I just hope my daughter isn’t part of the last generation to know this place as open, and free. I fear she’ll see only rooftops.
