Gorsedd Park & St Cynog’s

Gorsedd Park & St Cynog’s

My experimentation with soft pastels continues with my second piece. I photographed this scene of St. Cynog’s Church from Gorsedd Park a couple of weeks ago during the take-down of the Discover Ystradgynlais Christmas weekend. Having recently purchased a couple of sets of soft pastels and a black pad, I thought it would be worth trying to reproduce it in soft pastels.

It’s always a bit unnerving dipping into a new medium. Currently without any prior knowledge of techniques (though I’ve a book in the post), my initial thoughts on the piece as I laid the first strokes down weren’t good, but after the halfway point and a bit of fixing spray, I felt I got the hang of it.

Still loads to learn when it comes to working with pastel, but I’m really enjoying working in colour with a dry medium.
